SEAHORSE

The facts

01

During feeding and courtship, seahorses make sounds similar to the sound of smacking their lips. It's loud enough to be heard underwater.

02

Seahorse courtship behavior involves a "dance" that can last for hours.

03

A wandering eye?
No, two! Seahorses can see in two directions at the same time - useful for small fish that move slowly in search of prey or predators.

04

Male seahorses get pregnant, not females! Males have a special brood pouch in which females deposit eggs for male fertilization. The fertilized eggs develop there for several weeks until the father seahorse "gives birth" to many baby seahorses.

05

Seahorses have no teeth. Their straw-like mouths suck up all the tiny animals they need for food.

06

Seahorses propel themselves using a small dorsal fin that flaps up to 35 times per second.

07

Seahorses can change color! This helps them blend in with the background for camouflage.

08

Most wild seahorses are monogamous and remain faithful to only one partner. The couple bonds of these seahorses in love are strengthened by daily greetings.
